The Canary Islands, an archipelago off the coast of Spain have long attracted tourists to their isles. Formed from volcanic rock these seven islands have a unique and interesting history, not to mention outstanding landscapes - no wonder they’re so popular! The seven islands consist of the main tourist destinations, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and the quieter islands of La Palma, Gomera and Hierro. Tenerife – the largest and most popular of the islands, it has a reputation for attracting lots of British tourists who come for the sea and sand, just check out Monarch Airlines for Tenerife holidays. With temperatures of around 18 C in the winter and 24 C in the summer that is understandable but Tenerife has much more to offer! Attractions include the world’s third highest volcano Mount Tiede, which is still active – tourists can take a cable car ride to the summit and witness for themselves the crater at the peak, which is 20 km wide! There are other sights to see in the form of the Octopus Aquapark at Playa de las Americas and the Chacona pyramids in the Valley of Guimar. Gran Canaria – the third largest island, Gran Canaria has been called a miniature continent because of the sheer variety in its landscape and vegetation – the island plays host to pine forests, lime-trees, vineyards, coffee plantations, palm forests, banana-trees, amongst others. However there’s more than just scenery to be found here – Las Palmas, the capital of the island holds lots of festivals during the year, including WOMAD. According to a study at an American University, the city has the best climate in the world. Fuerteventura – regarded as the oldest of the Canary Islands this island is known for its beaches. With over 150 you’ll be spoilt for choice and, as you’d expect the island is incredibly popular for watersports such as diving, surfing and windsurfing. During July the island holds the P.W.A world windsurfing speed and slalom event at Sotavento in the south. Several companies such as Monarch Airlines offer cheap flights to Fuerteventura. Lanzarote – the outstanding volcanic landscape of Lanzarote will make you feel as though you’re on another planet. Volcanoes were active here even in the 18th and 19th century so large swathes of land are covered in ashes and lava. A visit to Timanfaya National Park to see how volcanic activity has shaped the land is a must-see. Aside from its landscape, Arrecife, the capital of the island plays host to three fortresses, San Gabriel, San Jose and Castillo del San Gabriel, built to defend the island against pirates. All are well worth a visit. La Palma, Gomera and Hierro – these three islands haven’t seen the kind of development that the four more touristy islands have, but the relatively unspoilt, impressive scenic sites are worth a visit for anyone who wants to get away from the larger and more crowded islands. back to top
