The must see destinations of Barcelona

Barcelona - Sagrada FamiliaSo you’ve already booked the time off work and you’re looking forward to jetting off to the sunnier climates of Barcelona.  Well serviced by low-cost airlines, Easyjet and Monarch both offer cheap flights to Barcelona all year round.

Barcelona is a city with a rambling sprawl of distractions. Assuming you’re on a limited time and budget, you’ll want to get straight to the good stuff, whether that be food, beaches, nightlife or the usual tourist attractions. Here’s a list of Barcelona must-sees.

1. Gaudi architecture. Park Guell – the garden complex designed by Gaudi and the unfinished Sagrada Familia are two of Barcelona’s main tourist attractions. Admire the architecture, stroll around the gorgeous gardens and generally take in the ambience in these beautiful spaces.

2.  Las Ramblas – walk along this famous street and you’ll see the many facets of Catalonian culture; from the food and drink in the cafes and markets, to the music of street performers. Go for a stroll and soak up the culture.

3. The Torre de Collserola is the 288m communications tower designed by Norman Foster for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics that dominates the Barcelona skyline. Ride up to the observation tower for breathtaking citywide views.

4. You can’t go to Barcelona and not see the Picasso Museum. With all manner of paintings and sketches, from early Picasso to the cubist paintings he is known for, this collection is a must see for any art lover.  The museum often holds special exhibitions, talks and lectures too so it’s worth seeing what’s on whilst you’re over there.

5. El Barri Gottico (the Gothic quarter) is the ancient medieval neighbourhood. Explore the winding cobbled streets,  look at the varying styles of Gothic architecture and feel like you’ve travelled back in time a few centuries. There is the Cathedral, first built in the 14th century, and you’re spoilt for choice with lots of excellent cafes and shops to investigate.

6. Lastly don’t forget Barcelona has lots of excellent beaches, perfect for anyone who likes their holidays a little more laid back!
