Southern Spain had, until recently been experiencing something of a housing boom over the last few years. With large numbers of British ex-pats choosing to live out a life of post-retirement bliss in the provinces of Valencia and Andalucia, both of these regions benefited from the economic boost of this. However, even amongst this relatively popular area, there are several locations that haven’t yet lost their charms to overzealous development of the tourist trade. Take, for example, the cities of Murcia and Almeria. Murcia, a province situated just north of the Andalucian province where Almeria is located, has been overlooked by developers in favour of lusher neighbours. However this may now work in its favour as the villages and towns still retain their wholly Spanish charms. Low cost airline operators such as Monarch provide cheap flights to Murcia and accommodation ranges from hotels and hostels to self-catering apartments. Major attractions include the Cathedral de Santa Maria which houses 25 bells and La Manga Club has some of the best golf facilities one could wish for. However, if it’s a taste of Spanish authenticity you’re after, head inland to the town of Jumelle where you can try the locally produced red wine. Life here continues much as it has done for the past century. Almeria is the Costa del Sol’s less busy cousin, in terms of resorts and tourism. Whilst its moonlike landscape may not be as attractive as Costa del Sol’s lush lands, they form an attraction in themselves because quite a few films were filmed out here – Lawrence of Arabia and Raiders of the Lost Ark being just two. The sets can still be visited at the Mini Hollywood and Texas Hollywood entertainment centres. Book cheap flights to Almeria online – Monarch Airlines is a good place to start. Main attractions here include the quiet town of Mojacar, which still exhibits close links to its Moorish heritage, with arab-style whitewashed houses set atop a hill. Explore Nijar, a nearby town famous for its pottery workshops as well as its jarapas, (rugs and bedcovers made from rags) and which make the ideal gift or reminder of your trip. If you’re willing to get away from the popular tourist traps and head into the (relatively) unknown, southeastern Spain has much to offer. back to top
